Turnberry Resort 5*, Bed and Breakfast, 1 night, 1 round of golf
The Ailsa Course atTurnberry is regarded by many as the best links course in Scotland, and will make a welcome return to the Open Championship scene when it hosts the world’s best in 2009. Set along some of the country’s most spectacular coastline, under the watchful gaze of the iconic lighthouse, Turnberry is a truly spectacular place for a golf break. The Ailsa has been well-known to the world since Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson’s legendary duel in 1977. Looking out to sea and the imposing Ailsa Craig, Turnberry boasts some world-class holes. Perhaps the best of them all is the tenth; from a remote tee set atop a rocky cliff-top promontory, the drive is across the corner of the bay, and offers visitors a glimpse of the site of Bruce’s Castle, home to Scotland’s 14th century King, Robert the Bruce. The narrow path and the tee shot itself are not for the faint-hearted, but are typical of Turnberry’s dramatic setting. Turnberry is fortunate enough to actually boast two quality links courses: like the Ailsa, the Kintyre (formerly called the Arran) was rescued from near extinction by architect Mackenzie Ross in the 1950s. At the Kintyre, fortunate visitors will experience fast, undulating greens, tight links turf, magnificent holes along the shoreline and glorious views of Kintyre, Arran and the lighthouse. The signature hole is undoubtedly the 8th, where following an elevated tee shot, golfers face a dramatic blind approach to a green set in a gully flanked by rocks. In addition, the Arran Course has been specifically designed to complement Colin Montgomerie’s Links Golf Academy.

Mount Wolseley Hotel, Spa & Country Club , Bed and Breakfast, 2 nights, 2 rounds of golf
Renowned golf course architect Christy O’Connor Junior was incredibly impressed with the landscape that he had to work with at Mount Wolseley, and that is reflected in the magnificent golf course that he has created. The site affords great views south and east to Blackstairs, Mount Leinster and Co. Wicklow. When stretched to its full length, O’Connor’s layout measures over 7,100 yards, and is a formidable test. However, the range of tees ensures that the course can be playable for all visitors. The superb parkland track features numerous water hazards, creating some exhilarating moments, not least on the signature 11th. This par-3 demands a shot of over 200 yards, across a gaping lake to a testing two-tiered target. A dramatic finish is assured, as golfers must negotiate the superb 18th, whose fairway is lined with enormous oak trees. The green is perched across a lake, and under the gallery at the clubhouse. The stunning golf course is the ideal fit to reflect the amazing countryside, and challenges golfers of all abilities without spoiling a good walk.

St Mellion International Resort 4*, Dinner, Bed and Breakfast, 1 night, 2 rounds of golf
Following a comprehensive £20 million redevelopment, the St Mellion International Resort now features the recently opened brand new 4* hotel plus significant improvements to the Nicklaus Signature Course and the Kernow Course (formerly the Old Course). St Mellion is arguably the premier golfing destination in the South-West, boasting two championship courses, and has welcomed the European Tour’s elite on no less than six occasions for the Benson and Hedges International. Nicklaus Course Opened in 1988, the Nicklaus Course at St Mellion was the Golden Bear’s first project in the UK, and to this day Jack rates it as one of his best creations. The £2.5 million investment now complete was overseen by the Nicklaus design team. From the championship tee markers the course measures 7,019 yards and is a thorough examination, but there are tees to suit golfers of all abilities. The Nicklaus is typical of its designer’s architectural ethos, with a premium being placed on finding the correct position from the elevated tees in order to attack the flags. Inaccuracy will be punished severely by the strategically positioned bunkers and water hazards around this South-Western gem. Kernow Course Formerly known as the Old Course, St Mellion’s Kernow is often in the shadow of Jack Nicklaus’ creation next door, but it is a fine championship layout in its own right. Though not particularly long by modern standards – the Kernow measures 5,782 yards – there is no shortage of challenge and intrigue. A major face-lift has seen the addition of new lakes and bunkers, plus some totally rebuilt putting surfaces. Spectacular scenery surrounds the course, whose highlights include the short 12th, where the green is guarded closely by water, and the memorable par-4 closing hole which demands two excellent strikes.
