The Hunting Course is the superior layout at Slaley, and has been recognised for many years as an official PGA Tour venue, having hosted the Great North Open. Dave Thomas' design measures over 7,000 yards from the championship markers, and has some formidable holes. The course winds its way through towering trees and banks of beautiful rhododendrons, and golfers will be faced with many different challenges, where shaping the ball and being creative is certainly an advantage. The signature hole of the resort is the Hunting's 9th, a tough par-4 where you must thread your drive between the monstrous trees on the right, and the meandering stream that skirts the left of the fairway. After a good tee shot, golfers are still left facing a long uphill approach shot to a severely sloping green, on what is one of the best par-4s around. The Priestman is the second course at Slaley Hall, but it should not suffer an inferiority complex. Designed by PGA Chairman Neil Coles, this is a great addition to the resort, making it one of the few to have two genuine championship courses. Opened in 1989, the Priestman has matured into a tournament venue, with some superb holes, and also fantastic panoramic views across the Tyneside Valley.Slaley Hall's extensive practice facilities offer visiting golfers the perfect chance for some tuition to sharpen up their skills.

Since opening in 1972, Stoke by Nayland's two championship golf courses have steadily established a superb reputation, and have now been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'. The outstanding golf courses have been awarded a Europro event for the past for years, and also saw Ryder Cup legend Sam Torrance claim victory in the prestigious PGA Seniors' Championship in 2006. Big Sam will aim for back-to-back wins here in 2007. The par-72 Gainsborough Course measures some 6,498 yards from the championship markers, and the tremendous rolling countryside is home to a truly spectacular layout, which is designed around the four expansive lakes that can wreak havoc with your scorecard. It is essential to drive the ball well around the Gainsborough, as being out of position off the tee will make scoring exceptionally difficult. The highlight is the awe-inspiring 10th, where golfers must play their drive and approach shot over the same lake. The Constable Course is similarly stunning, but is arguably tighter off the tee, owing to the mature woodland that skirts many fairways. There are several water hazards to be negotiated, and like the Gainsborough, retaining your concentration to the last is important; the closing hole is an exacting par-4, requiring a good drive over a large lake before you attack the plateau green. Stoke by Nayland's superb golf complex also offers first-class tuition, while the overall package makes it an educated choice for your society or corporate golf outing.
